LaunchLab recovery

Pick what happened. Nothing here erases your device on its own.

Failed or interrupted update

  1. Save the log

Read the error and download the installation log. If the updater stopped before writing, nothing on the device changed.

  2. Enter download mode

With USB connected, hold the side Power/Reset button until the green LED flashes, then release. Pick the new download-mode port. M5Stack K150 guide ↗

  3. Repair deliberately

In the updater, choose the intended version and Repair / rollback, then confirm. It rewrites only the app at 0x10000 after layout checks.

  4. Restart and check

Keep USB connected through verification, then check the version, READY screen and a few ordinary pulls.

If the layout check fails, or a first install was interrupted

If partition layout or boot selection fails, stop and keep your backup: First install is not an automatic workaround. After an interrupted First install, bootloader, layout and boot selection may be incomplete; a deliberate retry of the same bundle needs fresh backup and overwrite confirmation. Persistent failure needs the vendor route below or support.

Repair doesn’t change the sensor setting. From 0.10.18, pick QRE1113 or TCRT5000 under Settings › Sensor profile on the device.

Restore your launch data

With firmware 0.11 or newer, the updater can save your launch history, personal bests, theme and settings to a file, and restore that file after a crash or onto a new M5StickS3. Back up now and then; a restore replaces the data on the connected device. The file stays on your computer.

Before first install: a private backup

The browser cannot back up your factory firmware. If you have esptool, enter download mode and read all 8 MB:

esptool --chip esp32s3 --port PORT --baud 115200 read-flash 0 0x800000 sticks3-k150-before-install.bin

Check it finished, the file is 8,388,608 bytes, and keep a checksum and a second private copy. esptool read-flash docs ↗

Keep it private. A flash dump can contain credentials and personal records. Never upload it, attach it to an issue or commit it. A backup cannot undo chip security settings or fix damaged hardware; whole-device restore needs its own review.

Reinstall official M5Stack software

Use M5Burner and the StickS3 UIFlow2 guide, choosing UIFlow2 firmware for StickS3 K150. This installs vendor software, not the exact factory demo your unit shipped with; earlier settings and history may be lost. Coming back to LaunchLab afterwards is a deliberate First install with a new backup.

Repeated failure or no USB port

  • Try a direct port and a known data cable
  • Close apps holding the serial port
  • Re-enter download mode and keep power steady
  • Read Espressif troubleshooting ↗

Still stuck? Open an issue with your model, OS and browser, selected version and mode, the exact error, whether writing started, and a scrubbed log (remove port names and personal paths).
